Freire, the Matrix, and Scalability

An excellent presentation on Freire at AERA titled I’m Morpheus in this Hip-Hop Matrix: The Industry, Oppression, and the Word provoked some of the most (personally) interesting thinking I’ve done in a while. Short version: I’m now thinking that talking about the scalability of educational opportunity is immoral, and that there is a far bigger problem facing instructional technology researchers than simply making education more effective. ...

Somebody Better Tell My Colleagues!

In a blog entry that still has me chuckling, my research and I were today described as not being out on the fringe at all, but rather representing “the establishment.” Hopefully someone will point the other faculty in the Instructional Technology department here to this post, so they can see how completely normal I really am… :)

Which Die Are You?

[ ](http://dicepool.com/catalog/quiz.php) Take the quiz at dicepool.com Absolutely hysterical. Best quiz I’ve taken forever. From the excellent explanations at the end of the quiz: _This survey is completely scientific. Despite the mind-boggling complexity of mankind, the billions of distinctly different personalities found on Earth can easily be divided into seven simple categories that correspond to the five Platonic solids, a pseudo polyhedron, and whatever the hell a d100 is. The results of this quiz should be considered not only meaningful but also infallible, and pertinent to your success as a fully realized individual. If you feel the results of this examination do not match your perceived personality, you should take whatever drastic measures are needed to cram your superego back into proper alignment, as described by the quiz results. ...

Meeting David Carter-Tod

So I finally got out to meet David Carter-Tod. Absolutely smashing time. Exceedingly excellent guy. Very excited to hook up with him again sometime soon. Here are some pictures from the VCCS outing to Maymont to substantiate my claim that we actually met: Me and DCT Bridge in Maymont’s Japanese Garden

Igloo

Over the holiday break, which has been absolutely fabulous, my son David Enoch and I built our first igloo. It was a blast, and we’re looking forward to getting a couple more shots at igloo building before winter’s over.

Making the familiar strange

I’m visiting Australia for the first time this week, and have been absolutely amazed how hard it is to drive on the left side of the road. The cognitive load issues have been almost overwhelming. I’m three days into the trip now, and finally adapting somewhat. I wonder if this means I’m just getting old and from henceforth will have difficulty learning new tricks…

Missing the Point

Those who know my “Religious and Sacred Texts”:http://davidwiley.com/religion.html project will know that I am a religious person. Being so, I couldn’t not post this quote from Salon’s “review”:http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2003/08/14/gibson/index_np.html of Mel Gibson’s new movie about Jesus Christ. Following a recent screening of the film, the Anti-Defamation League voiced concerns that Gibson’s film, which he co-wrote, produced and directed, “will fuel hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism,” and could kick off another round of bloodshed by disconsolate Christians who had just about gotten over their savior’s death. ...

My love affair with a Steinway

PIDT: Day One

So here I am blogging during a session at PIDT in the absolutely fabulous YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO. I love attending these meetings because I keep either meeting or reconnecting with fabulous people. Today’s examples: “Trey Martindale”:http://www.soe.ecu.edu/ltdi/martindale/default.htm, who has a wicked three point shot, and perhaps my favorite colleague on the planet, “Janette Hill”:http://it.coe.uga.edu/~janette/. While leading a session titled something like “Where is the learning?” earlier this morning, it became clear that many of the people here don’t know what blogs or wikis are. So now tomorrow I’m doing an ad hoc intro to the topics, and will be updating my getting started guide accordingly…
