Great summary Dave, I really appreciate the effort and am admiring your course from a distance. Could you point me to some background info on the set up of this course? Who is paying (if anyone), what prompted it etc.. I don't recall you blogging much on its development.

In response for the comment from Karol:

"Does a basic human right, like education, imply that someone (e.g. a government) has the obligation to provide for that right? Who is responsible for the cost? (This is an interesting debate that is currently being held in the context of the right to health care in the U.S.)"

I think open ed. solve this problem but the governs would know the significate of this words:

"one dollar on education will be three dollars on productivity"

Low cost credits for students, scolarships for most advanced students... We can find many ways for take financial solution to education.

Re: "for those of us who live in UN members states (which I believe covers everyone currently in the class), we have already agreed that education is a basic human right"... has the US has ratified the UN human rights treaties? (I thought not from the readings.)

I too reread our Constitution this week as well as some case law regarding the "right to education" in the US. Legally, apparently, there is no expressed right. This was surprising given that the US has a very high value and provision for free universal education. It is interesting to look at the legal requirements vs. the actual provision of universal education for various nations.

Hallo everybody,
I must thank Andreas because he makes me remember the first day of work as a teacher. I went to school and the head master, Gianfranco Maretti, now my dear friend, gave me at first the book "Lettera a una Professoressa" (Letter to a Teacher) and he said me: "read it!". I was astonisched also because in his office there was four or five wood puppets "Pinocchio" on the ground. (Pinocchio is the character of Collodi book, but you probably know him for the Walt Disney picture). So I went home thinking about my role: "I have come here to make the teacher, not the student". But when I red the book and connected it to Pinocchio I understood how my mission could be.
Thanks Gianfranco and Andreas
